In 2009, the U.S. Embassy in Kigali, Rwanda become the U.S. Department of State’s third photovoltaic installation. The Embassy consumes power produced from a 251 kilowatt photovoltaic installation mounted on the roofs of two existing buildings. The installation is estimated to produce 425,000 kWh per year; enough to power 39 average homes. The systems was calculated to pay for itself within 13 years of installation.

Employees and visitors are advised of the system’s components and production capacity through a display located in the Embassy lobby. Scrolling screen shots include descriptions of the system installed, total production of the system, annual and daily production, the amount of carbon offset from the installation, and the current weather information.
